JUST A LITTLE PRACTICE

A parent with a child who is always stealing sweets from the nearby shop can take the following action

i) Buy the child sweets when possible
ii). Shout or beat the child
iii).Stop the child from going to the shops.

For each action above state whether it is positive /negative reinforcement or positive / negative punishment. Give reasons for your answers.

Based on Freud‘s defense mechanisms, indicate the mechanism being displayed in each of the examples given below

  1. A woman is unable to recall that she was raped.

  1. A boss has a temper tantrum when an employee makes a mistake.

  1. A brother yells at his younger sister after a teacher gives him a bad grade

  1. A student who goes out drinking the night before a big test rationalises his behaviour by saying that the test isn’t all that important.

  1. A student refuses to believe that he has flunked a course.

  1. A man who is unfaithful to his wife and feels guilty suspects that his wife is unfaithful.

  1. A person with strong feelings of aggression becomes a solider.
  2. A mother who unconsciously resents her child acts in an overly loving way toward the child.

  1. i. Positive reinforcement because the child is not discouraged from stealing but he is going to be given more sweets on top of the ones he had stole.
ii. Positive punishment: this action may weaken the child's eager to steal
iii. Negative punishment: The bad behavior is going to be removed by stopping the child from going to the shop.

  2. i)positive reinforcement because a good stimulus(more sweets) is added to encourage good behavior
ii)Positive punishment because shouting or beating the child discourages the child's behavior
iii)Negative punishment because the positive stimulus(going to the shops) is removed

    1. Tlali, reinforcer and reinforcement are different. Also in your response you seem to be mentioning two opposite things, stopping and continuing with stealing, yu have to go with one.

  8. i) Positives reinforcement
The act of buying sweets for the child will act as a stimulus hence the child will demand and steal more sweets due to this stimulus.

    ii) Punishment(Positive)
This is a positive punishment because beating the child is the stimulus that decreases childs behaviour of stealing.

    iii) punishment(negative)
This negative punishment only restricts the child from reaching the the shop and can decreases childs desire to stealing.

  9. i)negatave reinforcement because the sweets are bought to decrease the bad bahaviour.
ii)positive punishment because the parent is decreasing the behaviour by shouting to the child.
iii)Negative punishment because the stealing behaviour is stopped and cannot be repeated now.

  11. I) Negative reinforcement because to buy the child some sweets will decrease the rate of stealing. II) Positive purnishment because the child will be afraid of being beaten. III) Negative punishment: decrease in response of stealing because child will not see sweets again

  13. positive reinforcement- it will increase the child s eagerness to steal more sweets due to the exposure of the to the sweets
positive punishment - the child will recall the consequences of stealling before and after that action thus reduction of stealing
negative punishment - at one point or the other the child will have to go to the shop or might even sneak thus stealing
